Regional Contest season is off to a great start with the submission of projects for the Norwich, Mansfield, Hartford, and Torrington contests. All of us at the State Office are impressed, as always, with the breadth of topics covered and creativity shown by the students. We are all amazed by the commitment that you and your students have shown in continuing to participate in Connecticut History Day. We know it has been a grueling year. Thank you for your commitment! This year, the six Regional Contests are divided two at a time: Mansfield and Norwich on March 6; Torrington and Hartford on March 13; and Fairfield and New Haven on March 20. The dates were chosen to accommodate religious holidays, give volunteer judges the time needed to carefully assess each project, and allow for adequate time for students to improve their projects between contests. The virtual nature of the contests meant that we had to ask for projects due two weeks in advance of the contest. While nothing will replace the excitement of being at an in-person contest, the CHD team is planning some fun activities. On March 6, 13, and 20, view the Welcome Ceremony for each of the contests featuring good wishes from local officials, contest hosts, and regional coordinators. The Welcome will be shown on the CHD Youtube Channel, the CHD Facebook page and on the CHD website. All Contest-related content will be shown on this special page: https://www.historydayct.org/regionalcontestday.html After the conclusion of the Welcome Ceremony, all may enjoy viewing the student projects. A showcase for each contest will be located on the website. Also, links to programs, exhibitions, and tours from institutions in the Regional Contest areas will be featured each Saturday. Some contests will have live virtual events (such as a tour of the Slater Memorial Museum) that require participants to sign up in advance of the day. Please encourage your students to participate in the Contest Day activities! The Awards Ceremonies will be held on the following Mondays and broadcast on the CHD Youtube and CHD Facebook pages. We will be using the Streamyard platform, meaning that we can see comments throughout the broadcast. We hope that you may host watch parties with your students and make it a festive day. We hope that you and your students can help us document this extraordinary year of CHD. Please take pictures of students researching, creating their projects or reacting to the Awards Ceremony. Share your photos with us on social media using the hashtag #CHD2021.
